I'm glad, then... Shall we? [Gesturing with the hand not holding the comb!!] It's right at the end of this block.
no subject
Yeah.
[ He's not worthy, but he starts walking whenever she does. staying more than an arm's length away from her. ]
no subject
But Kaoru will lead this sad nerd to the cafe at the edge of the block, and if the stupid distance is noticed (it is) nothing is said about it (for now.) Once they get to the door though, SUDDENLY TURNING AROUND.]
Would you like to sit outside or inside? The weather is nice today, but there's a nook inside that's very lovely.
no subject
Eh?! Uh, er, nook? Nook...
[ Should they sit at the nook? Is it bad form to sit with her at a nook? Will he hate her if he says no? No, maybe it's customary to refuse instead!? ]
no subject
Stepping over the threshold first, Kaoru gestures over toward a little corner off to the side with comfortable-looking chairs and low hanging plants for decoration. It definitely looks a lot more cozy and warm than the seats outside...]
There— over there. Is that all right?
no subject
Ah, yeah...
[ Yata's just worried about how he's supposed to survive a cup of tea alone with a pretty lady, no big deal. ]
Uh, after you.
[ He'll stiffly amble after Kaoru and take a seat. ]
no subject
Or maybe it can't be heard because it doesn't exist...
ANYWAY, TO THE TABLE. Kaoru will take a seat too, seemingly at complete leisure in direct contrast to Yata the panicking loser.]
What sort of teas do you prefer? I've been here often, so I could suggest a few things.
no subject
... Green.
[ Look, Kaoru, just pick for him. He doesn't know anything about tea. ]
no subject
Do you prefer it plain, or do you enjoy sweet things?
[While speaking, a waiter comes over, ready to give out the menus. Kaoru raises a hand in polite denial, though. THEY'RE NOT GONNA BE STICKING AROUND LONG ENOUGH FOR ANYTHING BUT TEA that much is already clear... Someone needs to give Yata a lesson in how to handle interacting one on one with pretty princesses.]
no subject
... Plain.
[ Lesson #1: Stop giving one word responses that are hard to work with. It's bad enough that he doesn't know how to talk to this woman. As he looks around him, the more he can tell he doesn't fit in, either. Absentmindedly, he checks his watch because he is kind of REALLY RUDE. ]
no subject
As soon as the waiter leaves, Kaoru leans forward a little, brow drawing downward in an expression of concern.]
Ah, my... It seems I overestimated the time you have to spare. The drinks here don't suit your taste either, do they? [JUST CALLS HIM OUT ON EVERYTHING IN ONE FELL SWOOP.]
I can ask for yours to be put in one of their to-go cups, in that case. Will you forgive my presumption?
no subject
[ They're bad excuses, he knows. He doesn't know how else to deal with this sudden and hard-hitting guilt trip but to change the topic.
After looking away. ]
Um... I'm Yata.
no subject
Kaoru sits back in the chair, but the uneasy expression doesn't really leave, even though it fades.]
Ah, there's no need to apologize. I would just feel badly if I happened to be keeping you here when you had other places to go. [An attempt at a smile is made after that, though! A little more subdued than any of the ones before.]
It's a pleasure to make your proper acquaintance either way, Yata-san. My name is Nagumo Kaoru.
no subject
N-Nagumo-san. [ Look, he's trying to keep himself together, which means he's instinctively hunching his shoulders up. It's a defensive mechanism. ] Nice to, meet you.
no subject
The smile grows after his introduction, at least! It's warm and friendly in order to hide the fact that it's at his expense... HE'S JUST TOO FUNNY. Look at him hunching up!! He's like a small dog in the snow.]
I'm always glad to see that there are such kind people in this city... Even though I'm sad for my comb to break when I need it, I'm happy that it allowed me to meet someone so helpful.
[While talking, one of Kaoru's hands absently sweeps up to touch the place where the comb had been settled. Rudeshit accessories breaking so soon...]
no subject
These compliments are almost too much. That's his line, isn't it? All these ladies (haha) have been so nice to him, HE FEELS SO INADEQUATE!! Please don't mind how red his face is. It's normal. Stop laughing. ]
I-I'm not, um... [ Nevermind, denials are always awkward. Topic change. ] How long you been here?
no subject
Kaoru isn't laughing but there is definitely going to be a perpetual smile present for the duration of the conversation. Yata's funny, he's a keeper...]
Me? I've been here since the first group, I believe - back when the CEO came out to meet us and throw a barbecue in our honor. At the time, there couldn't have been more than twenty salvaged people there... [Not counting the NPCs and robots, that is.]
We were all so confused. No one else was here to explain things to us... But now, it's a little hard to remember that we started off with so few people. I would say it's been about three or so months since that day.
no subject
Three months is a while... A-are you the only one here? From your world.
no subject
I was the only one for a while - or rather, I met a few others who may be from my world, but they don't recall the same things that I do and I didn't know them personally. [DANG GUMIS. That's brushed over quickly though, since Kaoru doesn't really want to answer questions about those punks or feed any discussion that's centered around them.]
But luckily, my younger sister was brought in only about a month or so after my arrival. Even if it's just the two of us, it feels much less lonely.
[And then there's Shuu who is an outlier and shouldn't be counted, so Kaoru doesn't count him...
EITHER WAY while they're talking, the waiter will come over and place both cups on the table, which Kaoru will respond to with a "thank you" without missing a beat.]
no subject
[ If Anna was here, he'd be happy, too. She's not his real sister—in fact, he has a sister of his own—but it would put his mind at ease to know that she was with him and Totsuka, safe from harm. ]
Um... Uh... I-I got family here, too. I mean, they're not family family, but they're like family— [ He almost takes his cup of tea, but the heat prompts him to pull his hand away. ] Ow.
no subject
Are you all right, Yata-san? Please take care... [GOD, surrounded by clumsy buffoons.]
About family, though... It's a good thing, isn't it? To have people close enough to consider like blood, even if they aren't.
no subject
[ Kaoru does not want to send Yata to the hospital. Oh well, at least he's a regular. But wow, Kaoru is so kind and caring! Almost as caring as Yata's otome protag. As for family... ]
Yeah. I'm part of a team called HOMRA. Our bonds are thicker than blood... [ Or so they said. His hands ball into fists resting on the table. If those people leave you and you've abandoned your true family, what do you have left? In Cerealia, there's Saya and Totsuka, but Totsuka's dead and Saya's from a world he's never heard of. It makes him uneasy. ] I'm sure more of them will get here someday.
[ If he says it enough, it'll come true. ]
no subject
But Kaoru's keeping both hands away, so no heart attack will be in his imminent future, at least! Small blessings. Also listening attentively as he explains HOMRA! Even giving a reassuring smile when he tacks on that last statement, because it's actually something Kaoru understands to a degree. Waiting for Chizuru had brought on similar thoughts.]
I'm certain that they will, too. If your bonds are that strong, there's no way that they wouldn't arrive eventually, isn't that so? I'll hope that it's sooner rather than later for your sake, though.
no subject
Thanks... B-But Nagumo-san, this place's dangerous, ain't it? How'd you and your sister... you know. Survive?
no subject
Survive? [THEY DON'T. They're both already dead once-over...] Well... Day to day living isn't too difficult. Adjusting to the technology here was the hardest part. And when things start to get strange, I've been fortunate enough to make very kind friends who look out for us.
[Or, well. They look out for Kaoru, anyway... Chizuru has the Gumis though, which is basically the equivalent of a personal military. She doesn't need any of his friends!!]
